    JOE S. MAXEY

Édité sur Lu Pine Records, le single "Right On! (The Cream)/May The Best Man Win" est crédité a un mystérieux Joe S. Maxey Little 14 Year Old and His 15 Piece Orquestra the City Flames, enfin peut-être pas si mystérieux que ça. Les deux faces du single sont les mêmes que le single des Packers, a savoir "Hole In The Wall" pour "Right On! (The Cream)" et "Go 'Head On" pour "May The Best Man Win", a la seule petite différence pour "Hole In The Wall" des Packers, le morceau fini avant les "clappings" finals (fade out) par rapport à "Right On! (The Cream)/May The Best Man Win". (The Cream)" étant renommé pour l’occasion "Sign of the Crab".

     The circumstances surrounding West's departure from Detroit remain muddy: all that is definitely known is that he was involved in an altercation with Motown footnote Herman Griffin (then the husband of Mary Wells) that resulted in Griffin shooting out West's eye. West then relocated to Las Vegas and spent the remainder of his life outside the music industry;

In Las Vegas, Lu Pine was operated by Cholly Williams, a record producer previously in Hollywood (label: Hollywood Star, 1955).  Cholly, Las Vegas Strip, PS (distributed) Kone, Maggie Love and Tatum were also his.

I don't think that Cholly Williams had also the control of the Lu Pine, the pusblishing company, which stayed in the hands of Robert West probably.

    Hello tRebentine,

Thank you for all this info. I had read Robert West's story on the soulfuldetroit site, but I had no information about Cholly Williams, thank you again for that !!

    Best wishes for 2020.

On YouTube you can see two live-videos (with the 7" spinning on the turntable), one for each side of the UK single "Sign Of The Crab / May The Best Man Win (Action ACT 4607)" by the mysterious Joe S. Maxey.

The strange thing here is that the A side "Sign Of The Crab" is playing "Go Head On", and the B side "May The Best Man Win" is playing "Hole In The Wall".

So this is contrary to the US single on the Lu Pine label where "May The Best Man Win" plays "Go Head On", with "Hole In The Wall" titled "Right On! (The Cream)" playing on the A side of the disc.     (on the US Lu Pine single, the timing for the two single-sides are reversed)

Only mention this because I see the UK-versions on this excellent blog, have the two sides reversed, compared to what I can see and hear on those YouTube videos.

Thank you anbra57 for your comment!

On my two copies : US Lupine and Uk Action, the A sides play "Hole In The Wall" titled "Right On! The Cream" for Lupine and "Sign Of The Crab" for Action, and the B sides play "Go Head On" on Lupine and on Action, titled "May The Best Man Win". You are right, the timing on the Lupine sides are reversed on the labels. I guess you got both sides of this single, if not let me know I'll send them to you.

    Best Gerard

Thank you for that information, Gerard. Maybe the labels have been pasted on the wrong side for the 7"-single, that has been posted on YouTube.

And yes, It would be nice to have these 4 single variations on mp3, since they are edited a little longer than the Packers-versions.

Thanks again, and All the Best

Just to muddy the waters a little more...the writing credit for “Hole In The Wall” by the Packers on its original (?) Pure Soul Music release and on my UK Soul City re-issue read “Cropper-Jackson-Jones-N.Nathan”.

Were the Packers not named after former Mar-Key Charles “Packy” Axton ?
Didn’t Steve Cropper also play with the Mar-Keys ?

So aren’t 3 out of 4 names on that writing credit members of Booker T & The MG’s (Steve Cropper, Al Jackson and Booker T Jones) ?

So how does Cholly Williams end up with the writing and production credit on the Joe S Maxey release ?
